ItвЂ™s inspiring to have a governor whose wheelhouse includes clemency. ItвЂ™s inspiring to be on the shore, watching the tide of justice swing toward mercy and restoration. Sometimes it seems that the rudder and keel of American justice are jammed hard to starboard, from generations of puritanical fears and aspirations. Unfortunately, our prison system - unlike more reformed versions in Europe - trains its correctional staff to be warehouse supervisors and disciplinarians rather than agents of rehabilitation. Sadly well over three-quarters of all programs offered in state and federal prisons are brought in, paid for and staffed by volunteers. Putting his writing skills to broader use, he contracts with Church at the Park, blogging about novel approaches to reducing the social burden of homelessness while resourcing those on the street in their own arc of life restoration. HeвЂ™s also employed as a program coordinator and for WillametteвЂ™s Transformative Justice Initiative. For CJRC, he helps incarcerated juvenile applicants fashion a more effective application for clemency. Since his release, Sterling has continued his work with both universities. Likewise, he worked with Lewis and Clark University professor Aliza Kaplan to strengthen the law schoolвЂ™s Criminal Justice Reform Clinic and, paradoxically, was aided in his own quest for freedom through that venue. I met him while volunteering with my wife each week for 10 years at OregonвЂ™s maximum-security prison. A double homicide perpetrator when in his mid-teens, Sterling is now 44. Sterling Cunio, a friend of mine, was one of those released. In addition to hundreds of medical clemencies she granted, to reduce COVID-19 crowding, she also granted clemency to a raft of people convicted of serious crimes, after a thorough assessment of each applicantвЂ™s arc of change.
